چکیده

ROSSING OVER, the exchange of chromatin between homologous chroC mosomes, is of utmost importance in genetic studies. Although little is known about the mechanism which is responsible for this exchange, a number of facts on this subject have been fairly well established: (1) Crossing over is produced by breakage and reunion of broken end's (even on BELLING'S hypothesis, breakage and reunion have to be postulated to explain 3-strand and 4-strand doubles). (2) The position of the exchange is exaotly between homologous regions of the chromosomes. (3) Crossing over occurs at prophase of the first meiotic division. (4) Only 2 of the 4 chromatids are involved in any one crossover. (5 ) The occurrence of one crossover decreases the probability of another occurring in its vicinity-the phenomenon of interference. It has generally been assumed that there is little or no sister-strand crossing over. This

Studies on the Mechanism of Crossing over.

N E of the major objections to the torsion theory of crossing over as pro-0 posed by DARLINGTON (1935) is that it is difficult to comprehend why a break in one chromatid should cause a break to occur in exactly the same position in a chromatid from the homologous chromosome. This objection holds for any mechanism which postulates that crossing over occurs after the duplication of the chromosome...

The Behavior of a S Unstable Ring Chroaiosome of Drosophila R.ielanogaster'3

ING-SHAPED chromosomes provide an opportune situation for the analysis R of some aspects of chromosome mechanics. In particular, sister-strand crossing over eludes detection in rod chromosomes but its consequences in ring chromosomes are manifested by the formation of anaphase bridges. Thus RICCLIKTOCK (1938) and SCHWARTZ (1953) have presented cytological evidence for the occurrence of exchange...

Does Sister-Strand Crossing over Occur in Drosophila Melanogaster.

The problem of whether sister-strand crossing over does or does not occur is of some importance for general theories of crossing over. In most genetic experiments, i t is not possible to decide whether sister-strand exchange has or has not occurred because the results of both alternatives are indistinguishable. But with the use of the closed-X chromosome, described by L. V. MORGAN (1933), a sol...

A more critical test of hypotheses of crossing over which involve sister-strand exchange.

rather novel mechanism for crossing over based on BELLING’S ideas A (1933)-was suggested by LINDEGREN and LINDEGREN (1937) and its implications were thoroughly discussed by SCHWARTZ ( 1954). It was proposed that crossing over of the usual type (between nonsister strands) takes place between only two of the four chromatids, presumably the newly synthesized ones. In order to explain the occurrenc...

The synaptinemal complex and four-strand crossing over.

The synaptinemal complex provides a structural basis for four-strand crossing over: prior to chromosome pairing, both sister chromatids of each homologous chromosome participate in the genesis of one lateral component. During precise pairing, the two lateral components are combined into one synaptinemal complex per bivalent.
